In Cold Blood by Truman Capote

In Cold Blood tells the story of real life murders of the clutter family at their residence in 1959. Herb Clutter, his wife and two children lived in Holocomb, Kansas. They were ranchers by profession and were a pretty well-off family in the farming dependent neighborhood. The story is not written in a single point of view but with several characters throughout the chapters taken as the first person.

“Take ye heed, watch and pray: for you know not when the time is.”

The book is a very interesting read wherein it tells the story of the murder and the process to bring the culprits under conviction. The book focuses the most on the nature of the convicts, delving deep into their past, their thoughts which make the book further interesting and difficult to put down.

The characters of the perpetrators are written in a criminally immaculate manner. Richard Hickock and Perry Smith, two ex-convicts are proven to be the murderers wherein they travelled nearly 800 miles up and down in a single night, stopping to commit the murders. The backstory of the convicts and their light-psyched nature about the murders make the book a gripping story.

“in temperament he was a sensitive, reticent boy. His contemporaries thought him as ‘stand-offish’, yet forgave him saying, “Oh, Kenyon. It’s just that he lives in a world of his own.””

The mental instability of the perps, especially Perry Smith, his sense of justice, his ability to make others feel sorry for him add up to a surreal culprit and an even unrealistic but true story.

“I didn’t want to harm the man. I thought he was a very nice gentleman. Soft spoken. I thought so right up to the moment I cut his throat.”

In my opinion, the only downside to this novel was the length. The description, one or two times,  had me skipping a few pages; but I think that can be accounted for by my lack of patience. Overall a very entertaining read plus the knowledge while reading that it is inspired by a real crime makes it much more fascinating.Leave a comment if you would like to read the book. Until the next one.
